Several thousand Afghan families already call the Houston region home, with many starting their lives here in the Hillcroft area. That's where The Alliance, a non-profit organization, runs a refugee resettlement program. The group says it has helped five Afghanistan families within the last two weeks, and they expect many more.

Meanwhile, Refugee Services of Texas reports it will resettle around 40 Afghanistan refugees in the Greater Houston area.

Some 30,000 individuals are reportedly eligible to enter the U.S., with about 1,000 coming to Texas.

Refugee Services of Texas says it plans on resettling more than 300 in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin and Houston over the next few weeks.
