Coffee shop giant applies to patent slogan but is shut down by US Patent and Trademark office.
(Gabrielle Levy, UPI) -- Dunkin' Donuts makes the best cup o' joe in America, at least according to Dunkin' Donuts.
The US Patent Office disagrees: the Canton, Mass.-based coffee chain was rejected by the Patent and Trademark Office it tried to file for exclusive rights to the phrase "Best Coffee in America," the Boston Globe reported.
According to the Globe, Dunkin' Donuts was turned down because its slogan was "merely laudatory and descriptive," and the "slogan is nothing more than a claim of superiority."
Dunkin' may have had a slight claim to the title--it won top marks in an AOL.com poll in 2007, according to its website. But Starbucks could just as easily contest Dunkin's crown, with three consecutive years of Zagat poll victories under its belt.
