After having his home vandalized by teens, Houstonians rallied together to help 93-year-old World War Two veteran Elbert Wood with the help of KTRH Talk Show host Michael Berry.

"The phone calls started coming in. The emails started coming in... My text messages started blowing up."

Wood says he doesn't know why he was targeted by the vandals, who spray painted graffiti thourghout his home, but left the purple heart he was awarded in Guam untouched:

"I walk with a walker and I'm barely able to drive and do a few things; but I am able."

Berry helped mobilize a community effort for Wood:

"I said, 'if you bring me a check to our office - made out to Elbert Wood - I'll carry that with me.'  I had $50,000 in checks delivered to us by 1:30p.m. Tuesday so I could take them to him by 2:00p.m..  Every letter you write to Mr. Wood I will hand to him.  A little five-year old girl painted a picture for him and her mom brought it up, and she donated five-dollars."

Thanks to those donations and several local businesses, Mr. Wood's 50-year-old house will get a makeover. To find out how the community can continue to help Wood, email Berry.

The teenagers were later spotted, stained in the same red paint used to vandalize Wood's home.  They have been arrested.
