You've just bought your new big-screen TV just in time for the big game. Super Bowl Sunday is here and it's time to start entertaining friends and family who are gearing up for the biggest game of the year. What about the food?
Food is as much a part of the Super Bowl as the teams competing and the ridiculous-yet hilarious- commercials and over-the-top halftime show. Here are 10 foods and drinks that will surely have your guests leaving happy and full, no matter who wins the game. This list isn't in any order. Putting these delicious foods in any order just isn't fair.
1. Nachos: The crunchy tortilla chips smothered in gooey cheese and chili. Although messy, nachos are a great picking food to put center-stage on a coffee table. A feeding-freenzy will sure to begin. Make sure there are plenty of napkins or you'll find yourself trying to remove cheese-stains from your couch all the way up to next year's Super Bowl.
For the vegetarians at the party, just leave off the chili.
2. Pigs in a blanket: Is there any finger-food more popular than pigs in a blanket? Served with mustard or ketchup (or any dipping sauce for that matter), these dogs are Super Bowl stars. Cook them until their golden brown and enjoy.
3. Buffalo Wings: If the pigs are game stars, Buffalo wings are legends. Whether you fry 'em or grill 'em, once those wings are ready to go, pour on the sauce. Whether it is honey-BBQ, mild, hot or blazin', the sauce makes the wing. Partner them up with some blue-cheese and ranch dressing, and you have yourself one heck of a wing. Just like the nachos, make sure you have napkins near by. Better yet, make it wet-naps.
4. Meatball Sliders: Meatballs are usually in a supporting role, commonly with pasta. But as an appetizer, the meatball has the spotlight. Whether you use frozen meatballs (boo) or make your own (yes!), this saucy appetizer goes great with a sliced roll and makes a quick and easy snack during a commercial or timeout.
5. Blazing
6. Shish Kebabs: Finally a food that can cater to both vegetarian and non-vegetarians alike. Whether you choose meat or vegetable's, these easy meals on a stick are sure to be crowd-pleasers. Adding fruit and veggies with meat- or keeping the meat out completely- keeps things interesting for your guests. They're easy to make and even easier to clean up, putting a smile on the host's face.
7. Pizza Bagels: Probably the easiest to make on this list, mini pizza bagels are simple and quick and, honestly, are delicious. No cooking experience required here, as several great options are available at your local grocery store. With so many different varieties (cheese, sausage, meatball, etc.), it is an inexpensive way to make everyone happy.
8. Corn Dogs: There are bound to be a few kids watching the game with you (keep the profanity down), and we all know how picky they can be. But what child doesn't like corn dogs? All you need is a hot dog (maybe the left-overs from the pigs in a blanket?), and dunk them in cornmeal and flour and just fry them up. Pop in skewers (from the awesome shish kebabs you made earlier?) and chow-down.
9. Margaritas: We know the ladies at the party probably won't be interested in the game, so why not let them enjoy themselves with a few cocktails? And what is better than a margarita? With so many different recipes, including banana, strawberry and mango just to name a few, most women at the party won't mind sitting through a four hour game they don't really understand.
10. Beer: Simply put, nothing goes hand-in-hand with football more than a cold one. Whether you decide to go domestic with Budweiser, Coors or Samuel Adams, or even local with Bluepoint, Brooklyn Brewery or Brickhouse in Patchogue, beer is a mainstay. Just make sure everyone is of age.
So there you go, 10 foods and drinks that will surely be asking your friends if you'll be having another party next year..... when the Texans are playing in the game.
Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning in Gobbler's Knob. That means six more weeks of winter. That could explain the cold front that is headed our way. Tonight we're gonna drop down to 64.
My Pennsylvania family and friends will hate me for this blog. Here's a peak of what you can see in Punxsy, PA.
