Who was Chris Blackwell? He was one of the firefighters that lost his life twelve years ago today.
I never knew Chris. His brother, Steve, is a good friend of mine and I'd like to take a moment to recognize Chris and say thanks.
Chris Blackwell was a twenty year veteran of the FDNY, with the last twelve years being a member of "Big Blue". That's what they call Rescue Company 3. During his career, he had been awarded several fire department medals for bravery.
On Tuesday September 11, 2001 he was one of the many first responders that answered the call of duty...and one of eight, from Rescue Company 3, that didn't return home.
Steve shared some stories of what it was like growing up with Chris. One in particular that stood out, involved a distempered raccoon. This raccoon was roaming the neighborhood and got too close to some kids that were playing. Without going into too much detail...Chris lead the kids to safety and put the raccoon down. Keep in mind, that Chris is basically still a kid himself!
That's the kind of guy he was. His first thought was always about others. So, it was no surprise to anyone when he became a firefighter.
In honor of Chris and the many other first responders that died that day, the many people that died that day, and the many people that lived that day...please take a moment to thank God for people like Chris.
Chris left behind his wife, two daughters, and his son.
Thanks to Steve for the pics of Chris and Getty Images for the flag pic.
