Texas Paying Less At the Pump Labor Day Weekend

Texas Paying Less At the Pump Labor Day Weekend
Posted August 29th, 2014 @ 4:00am by KTRH News Staff

For Texans who plan to take the traditional end-of-summer road trip this weekend, filling up at the pump will cost less than one week ago and one year ago.  The statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel in the Lone Star State is now $3.26, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.  That price is two cents less per gallon than one week ago and 16 cents less per gallon than one year ago.  The statewide average is also 17 cents less than the national average of $3.43.  Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas drivers in El Paso are paying the most at $3.33 per gallon while drivers in Beaumont are paying the least at $3.20 per gallon.

AAA Texas forecasts more than two and a half million Texans will travel 50 miles or more from home between Thurs., Aug. 28 and Mon., Sept. 1, which is the highest volume for Labor Day since 2008 and nearly a two percent increase over last Labor Day weekend.  Of those traveling, 2.1 million people will go by automobile.

Compared to this time last year, drivers in most states are paying less at the pump.  Geopolitical turmoil continues to dominate headlines, but unlike in recent years when international turmoil triggered higher global crude oil prices and ultimately higher prices at the pump, that has not been the case this summer.  In recent weeks, oil markets have largely shrugged off reports of violence and tensions overseas and have instead moved steadily lower as analysts have assessed the potential for a disruption in oil supplies to be limited.  The easing of global crude prices has been a driving factor behind the falling retail gasoline prices across much of the country.

“We’re hopeful the savings at the pump will benefit drivers who are hitting the roads to spend the long holiday weekend with friends and family,” said AAA Texas/New Mexico Representative Doug Shupe.  “We also remind drivers to get plenty of sleep before road trips, make sure everyone in the vehicle is buckled up at all times, obey speed limits, never be distracted behind the wheel by mobile devices or other distractions, and never drive after drinking alcohol.”

To help members and non-members identify quality auto repair shops that can assist in the maintenance and repair of their vehicles, AAA offers the Approved Auto Repair program as a free public service.  AAA-approved repair facilities meet and maintain high professional standards for training, equipment, cleanliness and customer service. Motorists can look for the Approved Auto Repair sign at local auto repair facilities, or search for a nearby AAA-approved shop online at AAA.com/Repair
